Animals • Humming birds- smallest animal to have a backbone The humming bird is also the only bird that can fly forwards, backwards, up, down, sideways, and hover. • Howler Monkeys- known for their loud howls. Loudest animal in the new world. They use their loud voices to defend their space. • Leatherback Turtle- Largest of all living sea turtles. They are critically endangered, and they hunt jellyfish.
Popular Authors • Kirk A. Inniss wrote the novel The Black Butterflies. • Another novelist, Harold Sonny Ladoo, wrote the book, Yesterdays.
Government Parliamentary Democracy Political Parties: People’s National Movement, United National Congress, Congress of the people, plus other minor parties. The president is George Maxwell Richards. The prime minister is KamlaPersad-Bissessar. Tobago has its own elections. They vote for members for Tobago House of Assembly.
Cities • Scarborough- the capital of Tobago. (last picture) • Charlotteville- a village on the North-eastern tip of Tobago. (1st picture) • Canaan- small town in southwest Tobago • Bacolet- south east of Scarborough. One of the most devolved parts of Tobago. (2nd picture)
Culture • They speak English. • They are mostly catholic: 26% • Tobagonians go fishing close to the shore with nets. It's called Pulling seine. It's part of the tradition, "Len han"
Attractions • Buccoo Reef- a protected marine reserve. (last picture) • Argyle Waterfall in Scarborough, Tobago. (1st and 2nd picture) • Little Tobago-tiny island also known as Bird of Paradise Island. Perfect place for bird watching. (3rd picture)
History • Tobago gained their independence on August 31st, 1962. • Tobago switched possession of countries 31 times until 1814 when it stayed under Britain's rule. • Britain had no further use for Tobago so in 1889 it became a ward of Trinidad.
Geography • Tobago is about 1,864 square miles. • Tobago is mostly broadleaf or semi-deciduous forest and mosaic vegetation. • Tobago's annual mean temp is 77-80 degrees.
Tobago Food • Bake and Shark – a sandwich considered a delicacy. It is popular at Marcas Beach. • Curry Chicken and Roti- nationally well known main dish adapted from India in the 19th century. • Coconut water and rum can be found everywhere in Tobago and Trinidad.
