  4. US Constitution • The first document written to establish American government was the Declaration of Independence (July 4th). After the Declaration of Independence came the Articles of Confederation, in effect from 1781-1789. It gave more power to the states than the central government. • Many leaders believe that Congress needed more power. In May 1787, a meeting was held to draw up the constitution. It was , signed on September 17 document , 1787.

  5. US Constitution • It was ratified on June 21,1788, by 9 out of 13 states, only when the Bill of Rights were added. • The Bill of Rights were added in September 1789. • Consists of Preamble, Bill of Rights, 17 more Amendments.

  6. Bill of Rights • Added to the US Constitution in September 1789, lists the 10 basic rights that our government can not take away from the people.

  8. Bill of Rights-The first ten amendments to the U.S. Constitution are summarized below. • 1 Freedom of religion, speech, press, assembly, and petition. • 2 Right to keep and bear arms in order to maintain a well regulated militia. • 3 No quartering of soldiers.

  9. 4 Freedom from unreasonable searches and seizures. • 5. Right to due process of law, freedom self incrimination, double jeopardy. • 6 Rights of accused persons, e.g., right to a speedy and public trial.

  10. Bill of Rights • 7 Right of trial by jury in civil cases. • 8 Freedom from excessive bail, cruel and unusual punishments. • 9 Other rights of the people. • 10 Powers reserved to the states.

  11. Partner activity The Bill of rights are all mixed up. Please work with a partner to sort the cards into the proper order.
