World war II • Joined US Naval Reserve in 1943 • Assigned to Bureau of Ships Computation Project at Harvard • Programmed for the Mark series of computers • Remained at the Harvard Computation Lab until becoming a research fellow under Navy contract (1949)
UNIVAC & COBOL • UNIVAC • UNIVersalAutomatic Computer I • Developed by Eckert-Mauchly Computer Corporation • Developed first-ever compiler during this time – the A-0 System • COBOL • Extension of Hopper’s previous work, combined with influences from IBM • Strongly believed that programs should be written in near-English
Retirement & death • Retired from the Naval Reserve in 1966 with the rank of commander • Returned to active duty in the 1970’s • Promoted to rank of rear admiral (commodore) in 1983 • Oldest active-duty commissioned officer in the Navy at time of final retirement in 1986 • Consultant for Digital Equipment Corporation until her death in 1992 • Buried at Arlington National Cemetery with full military honors
