  3. Given • Coolest toy is being used • Data Projectors – wow! • Computers • Video • Internet

  4. What else? • This stuff could be boring! • Bigger faster • More hard drives • Gigabit • Wireless • Firewall • Protection

  5. Early cool • PLATO (then Novanet) • Lessons • Gradebook • Feedback • SIMULATIONS • Servicing a nuclear missile • Dangerous chemistry

  6. Fun things • Hyperstudio was fun • Students making packages • Self paced for many students • Sounds • Self scoring

  7. What does a school need? • Access to a real web server • Plug’n’chug doesn’t count • Somebody to install toys • PERL to do self scoring tests • MYSQL to run databases • FrontPage extensions

  8. What else? • Forget the video tape media retrieval system • What does it do for you? • $100,000 buys lots of VCRs and tapes • How about DVR? • Same movie multiple starts and stops

  9. AND? • Phone system • Include voice mail! • One in each room • Ever wonder why the secretaries have phone and you don’t?

  10. Video conferencing • Yes it is real • No it is not $100,000 per room • Several brands • H.323 compatible • Netmeeting worked • Could even set it and forget it • Zoo

  11. Cut the cord • Wireless • Doesn’t have to be expensive • Spread through out • What hooks in?

  12. Classrooms • Sound! • Microphone for the teacher • Wireless • Good for the voice • Good for the Students • Big speakers • VCRs can’t be heard with TVs

  13. And? • Mount the projector • TV’s can’t be seen • 3x the diagonal measure • Use for videos • Show it on the big screen • Demonstrate editing • Stop wasting time with the cables

  14. Is there more? • Digital cameras • Go cheap • Will $50 hurt as bad as $300? • Can you see the difference? • Can you digital video? • What about Johnny sick at home?

  15. Speaking of video • Visual presenters • Elmo are nice • If you are rich • Dukane • Has several options • Put it on the big screen!

  16. Boards • OK so I am biased • Remote control (slate) • Hard surface • Integrates

  17. Feedback • Student response system • Preferably integrated with board • Allows students to respond • Quick check for learning

  18. What about? • Handhelds • IPAQ • Go wireless • Palm • If you must • TI graphing calculator • Bet you didn’t know they can send to the teacher

  19. Software for teachers • Inspiration • Graphic organizer • Powerpoint • Presentation • Use what they recommend • WYSIWYG web editor • Set up lots of fun things

  20. How about? • A “web site” that teaches? • Present information • Afterschool can review • The Web Server • With the right toys • Score quizzes • Count time • Ensure student accessed

  31. And… • Remember the school technology trust fund? • 42 million year 1 • 74 the next • 142 the next • Tech facilitators etc middle schools • The following year buy for other grades • 

  32. You know you are old when • 7-11 slips • County by county fines • ACOT was an option • AUPs weren’t necessary (computers weren’t connected) • You had to write lesson plans for LEARN NC
