  1. Insightful Understanding of China's Higher Education and Research in Computer Science and Information Technology Fred Roberts Co-Organizer US NSF Senior Computer Scientists Delegation

  2. China now is playing a very critical role in the global economy. China has rapidly developed its college and graduate education and research programs Almost all the major and leading U.S. computer software and hardware companies have quickly established Research Labs in China. Research in Computer Science and Information Technology is burgeoning in China and many important projects are underway. Motivation

  3. There are already a number of collaborative US-China NSF-sponsored projects. Some Samples: Giga-Scale System-On-A-Chip Cyber-enabled Ecological Inquiry Million Book Digital Library Project GLORIAD – Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development Dragon Star Project …… Related Projects

  4. Giga-Scale System-On-A-Chip 千兆级系统集成芯片设计 • This project led to establishment and successful operation of the International Research Center on System-On-a-Chip (SOC) Designs (IC-SOC) • The project involves researchers from seven major universities in the United States and China (including Taiwan).

  5. Giga-Scale System-On-A-Chip 千兆级系统集成芯片设计

  6. Cyber Enabled Ecological Inquiry - A Cyber-Physical Learning Environment for Ecological Education and Assessment Research A collaborative project between Information Technology in Science (ITS) Center for Teaching and Learning at TAMU and the Computer Network Information Center (CNIC) of Chinese Academy of Sciences (supported by a supplement grant to the ITS Center, NSF#ESI-0083336)

  8. Million Book Digital Library Project • This is an international project to create a free-to-read, searchable collection of one million books, available to everyone over the Internet. • Project partners include government, academic institutions, and libraries in China, India, and the United States.

  9. Million Book Digital Library Project

  10. GLORIAD – Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development • GLORIAD provides scientists around the globe with advanced networking tools that improve communications and data exchange. • GLORIAD exists today due to the shared commitment of the US, China, and many other countries to increased engagement and cooperation. • The benefits are shared with S&E communities throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas.

  11. GLORIAD – Global Ring Network for Advanced Applications Development

  12. The Dragon Star Program • A volunteer organization for teaching graduate courses in China by outstanding overseas professors. • Between 2002 and 2005, 21 professors taught 32 courses (15 - 30 hours each) hosted by 17 Chinese institutions for 2,637 Chinese students.

  14. April 2005, a CISE delegation, led by Peter Freeman, visited more than 15 institutions May 2006, our delegation consists of deans and dept. heads from top US universities Objectives of our visits: To establish a dialogue between leaders of major U.S. Computer Science departments in the U.S. and their counterparts in China, To identify key areas of information technology research in China, To gain insight into current and future trends in IT research in China, and To lay the groundwork for potential future interactions.
