Grassland and Steppe Biome Katie Hagen & Terry Thibodeaux
What is Steppe? Steppe is the Russian word for “grassy plain”
Steppe is found in: North and South America Africa Europe Central Asia
Characteristics of Steppe Dry and Cold Mostly animal population, very small human population Found primarily in Southeastern Europe and Asia. Climate change varies 10 years of good rain 10 years of drought
Temperate Grassland • Moderate climates • Located farther from the equator • Growing season for plants is 120-300 days • Cover 25%-30% of the Earth’s surface • 1600 different identified species of insects
FIRE • Very important in grassland survival • Grass regrows because of adaptation to the dry environment, and deep root system • Eliminates the competition from trees and other shrubs for nutrients
Climate • Summer is hot and wet • Winter is cold • Rainfall Gradient: • Decrease from the Eastern Border of the U.S. to the foothills along the Rocky Mountains • Similar Gradient occurs in parts of Europe
Small Grassland Animals • Moles • Shrews • Gophers • Ground squirrels
Intermediate Sized Animals • Opossum • Fox • Coyote • Badger • Skunk • Rabbit • Prairie Dog
Larger Mammals • Mule Deer • Pronghorn • Bison • White-tailed Deer
Temperate Soil • Very deep • 3ft are neutral to basic pH • High amounts of organic matter • Highly fertile • Have to be rich in minerals because rainfall is inadequate
