Sonnet comes from the Italian word sonnetto, meaning “a little sound or song”
Structure • 14 lines • Set rhyme scheme • Meter = iambic pentameter • 10 syllables per line of an unstressed followed by a stressed syllable. • My LOVE is LIKE to ICE and I to FIRE.
Sonnet Forms • 1. The Italian Sonnet (also called Petrarchan Sonnet) • Petrarch wrote many sonnets in this form about unrequited love. • First 8 lines = octave • Last 6 lines = sestet • There is a “shift” or “turn” between the octave and sestet that provides a resolution or answer to the problem presented in the octave.

Sir Thomas Wyatt • Poet and diplomat for King Henry VIII • Faced execution twice, but was pardoned both times. • He traveled to Italy and experienced the Italian renaissance. He brought the Italian sonnet form to England, which transformed English poetry. • Wyatt song and lute
King Henry VIII • The Wives of Henry VIII His reign began in 1509. He broke with the Catholic Church and began the Church of England (Anglican Church) His daughter Elizabeth ruled from 1558-1608 and was one of the most influential leaders of England.

3. The Spenserian Sonnet • Created by Sir Edmund Spenser Follows the same structure as the English/Shakespearean sonnet, but has a different rhyme scheme.
