to understand how the life of Zheng He on a junk boat. To understand what was traded back and forth from China and the rest of the world on junks
Starter • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzFq0Ivwz9g • Watch this video • What do you find interesting about Zheng He? • What did he trade? • What did he bring back?
ZhengHe, originally named Ma He, was born into a Muslim family just beyond the borders of China (later Yunnan Province in the southwestern part of China) in 1371.
His journeys on the sea • From 1405 to 1433, Zheng He led his fleet to voyage to the Western Sea for seven times. The number of ships of his fleet was from 40 to 63 each time, taking many soldiers and sailors on the voyage, with a total party over 27,000 people.
Junk boats • What did Zheng He trade with other countries? • What did Zheng He bring back from other countries?
Activity #1 • Use the information in the reading and the handout to fill in the goods that were traded on the junk boat. These are goods that went out of China and goods that came back. • E.G. an export was silk. • An import was giraffe and zebra skin
Activity #2 • Imagine you are ZhengHe going over all the world transporting these goods. Use the fact sheet of the junk to make a travel log of life on a junk. Input 5-10 travel log entries over a period of 6 months. What kind of feelings did they have when the journey started? What activities were there to do on a junk boat? What was the weather on the trips like?
Example • 10:33 am March 15, 1391 We Just set sail for another country. Got the freshwater loaded up for the sailors to drink on the journey. I’m excited about the journey. I heard that we might be able to trade the silk for some giraffe and zebra. The men were planning on telling stories for entertainment tonight. I’m hoping the weather won’t be too stormy.
