M 10/29: Explain Outline; Order & Omit Historical Background Cards • Divide your notecards into 4 piles: • History • Scientific • Real-World • Bibliography cards • Label the notecards in each pile with either a H, S, or R. Leave the bibliography cards alone. • Now with your HISTORY cards ONLY, lay them out in the order you want them to appear in your paragraph. • Then, # them (H1, H2, etc.) & OMIT any cards that do not support the topic really well or do not flow Science Fair Research Paper Timeline

T 10/30: Write Historical Background Paragraph; Sort Scientific Background Cards • Take your Historical Background cards and lay them out in number order. • Determine a main topic sentence for your Historical Background paragraph. • On a separate piece of paper, begin writing your paragraph with the topic sentence • Then, use the rest of your “H” info to write the rest of the paragraph • After you’re finished with your History Paragraph, start sorting your Scientific Background (S) cards and # them! W 10/31: Write Scientific Background Paragraph; *use rubric • Take your Scientific Background cards & lay them out in #order. • LOOK AT THE RUBRIC on the back of your outline! • Determine a main topic sentence for your Scientific Background paragraph. • On a separate piece of paper, begin writing your paragraph with the topic sentence • Then, use the rest of your “S” info to write the rest of the paragraph • After you’re finished with your Scientific Paragraph, start sorting your Real World Application (R) cards and # them! MLA citing If the author's name IS mentioned in your sentence or paragraph • Cite the page number in parentheses right after the quote: • Dr. Brown argues that "it's a good idea to watch for a few weeks" (7) when joining a new group. • Dr. Brown argues that "it's a good idea to watch for a few weeks" (“New Group Dynamics”) when joining a new group. If the author's name IS NOT mentioned in your sentence or paragraph • Include the author's last name and the page number at the end of your sentence! • The modern world requires both the ability to concentrate on one thing and the ability to attend to more than one thing at a time: "Ideally, each individual would cultivate a repertoire of styles of attention, appropriate to different situations, and would learn how to embed activities and types of attention one within another" (Bateson 97). If you DON’T KNOW THE AUTHOR • If a source does not include an author's name, substitute for the author's name the title or part of the title at the end of the sentence. Underline the title if the source is a book; if the source is an article, use quotation marks. • The use of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) systems has grown substantially over the past five years as companies attempt to adapt to customer needs and to improve their profitability ("Making CRM Work").

  6. If you have a website and do NOT know the author… Find the title of the ARTICLE. Go back to your website and find the TITLE OF THE ARTICLE. • Write your sentence, and then at the end of the sentence, cite the title that you found. • For example: • The use of Customer Relationship Management systems has grown over the past five years ("Making CRM Work"). • **Put the title in quotes and then inside of parentheses! • If you used a lot of info from that 1 article in your paragraph, cite the title at the end of the whole paragraph.

  7. F 11/2: Vocab #7 Quiz; Sort Real-World Application Cards • **Remember: Real-World Application is how is your topic significant TODAY. What advancements are being made and what does the future look like. • Now with your REAL WORLD cards, lay them out in the order you want them to appear in your paragraph. • Then, # them (R1, R2, etc.) & OMIT any cards that do not support the topic really well or do not flow Science Fair Research Paper Timeline

  8. M 11/5: Write Real-World Application Paragraph **Remember: Real-World Application is how is your topic significant TODAY. What advancements are being made and what does the future look like. These 3 things must be in your RW paragraph: Describe how your topic is applied to a real world problem or issue and how it may be used to address a specific problem. How does your topic help in solving the problem or issue Relate your topic to 2 of the following factors: Moral: personal beliefs of right vs. wrong Social: interaction of people (society) Ethical: society/scientific view of Right vs. Wrong Economic: dealing with money Political: politics/government Cultural: background/culture groups Environmental: environment/nature Science Fair Research Paper Timeline

  9. T 11/6: Write Intro & Conclusion! • Intro: (4-6 sentences) • Hook the reader with a short explanation of your personal experience or interest in the topic! (2-3 sentences) • Last sentence of Intro paragraph: Thesis Statement! (AKA Topic Sentence of the WHOLE paper! ) • Conclusion: (4-6 sentences) • Review your main ideas/topics of each paragraph briefly (OPTIONAL) • Finish your personal experience or story that you started in the Introduction • End by restating your THESIS statement from your intro. Open Word document • Put your name at the top! • Then start TYPING!!! • MAKE SURE YOU SAVE OFTEN!!! • Here’s how to save: • File • Save-As • On the left scroll down to Student (S) drive and click • Find Folder “Science Fair Papers PEPE&BUCHANAN” • Then save your paper as “Last name, First Name” • For example: Pepe,Ashley

When you are finished typing your text: • Press enter until you Start a new page after your text. • Title that page Bibliography and center that word • Enter down and start typing in your 6 sources (from your Bibliography notecards) • Type in the author’s last name, first name • Then add the title of the article • Then add [Online] • Then the actual website address • Then the DATE THAT THE ARTICLE WAS WRITTEN • *If you don’t know the author of the article, go to the website and FIND IT! Here’s an example: Davis, Heather: ‘Guidelines to writing’ [Online] http://www.usa.net/~hdavis/home.html> Jan 7, 1999

  12. Last Day of Research Paper: DUE TODAY!!! Find your document: Student (s) Drive, Science Fair Papers PEPE&BUCHANAN, then find your name! Bibliography example: Davis, Heather: ‘Guidelines to writing’ [Online] http://www.usa.net/~hdavis/home.html> Jan 7, 1999 • NOW you will make a title page for your Research Paper AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR DOCUMENT: • Space down 5 lines and write a title for your Research Paper (This can be cute/clever) Make sure to capitalize all of the important words and center the text • Space Down 5 more lines and type your Name (First and Last) AND STUDENT # make sure to capitalize and center! • Space down 3 more lines and type: 8th Grade Science Fair Research Paper November 13, 2012 ***ALL TEXT SHOULD BE IN 12 POINT, “TIMES NEW ROMAN” FONT! After you finish your title page, • double space the entire paper • add a header with your last name and page number for all pages except the title page *Insert, Page Number, Top of Page, Plain Number 3, Then add your Last name in front of the number and check to see that it added it to all of your pages. The only page that should NOT have a header is the title page *The way to get it off the title page is to double click inside the header and check “different first page”
