  1. LEARN TO READ THE BIBLE EFFECTIVELY Presenters: Ken Sommerville Jeff Gelineau

  2. LEARN TO READ THE BIBLE EFFECTIVELY Session 4 Using Cross References Different Versions of the Bible Overview of Books (4) Bible Terminology (2)

  3. Tips on Reading The Bible • Symbols are usually not self-explanatory, they must be explained to be understood • Bible symbols must also be explained… by the Bible • Therefore, read all Scriptures literally unless the Bible tells you differently and gives you the interpretation

  4. Why Two Testaments • Old Testament books and New Testament books are both essential to “salvation” • It was not these books that were to be pass away, but the Old Covenant through Moses • The Old Covenant was to be replaced by the New Covenant in Christ

  5. Poetry & Philosophy • Job • Psalms • Proverbs • Ecclesiastes • Song of Solomon

  6. What is “faith”? • Faith is not just believing in God, it is believing God – fully, completely • People of faith are willing to “bet their life” on what God has promised!

  7. USING CROSS REFERENCES (Section 12, pg. 51 in Notes)

  8. TYPES OF CROSS-REFERENCES Center Column References

  9. TYPES OF CROSS-REFERENCES Verse/Page Footnotes

  10. TYPES OF CROSS-REFERENCES Treasury of Scripture Knowledge

  11. USING CROSS-REFERENCES How to use them… • Link Teachings between OT & NT • Fill in details regarding Persons, Places, Subjects • Fill in details regarding Parallel Accounts • Clarify Meaning of a Passage • Extend Understanding of Text

  12. David Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced; burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not require. Then I said, “Here I am, I have come - it is written about me in the scroll. I desire to do your will, O myGod” - Psalm 40:6-8 Jesus “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings you were not pleased. Then I said, ‘Here I am--it is written about me in the scroll-- I have come to do your will, O God.’ ” - Hebrews 10:5-7

  13. “My Ears You Have Pierced” - Psalm 40:6 If you buy a Hebrew servant, he is to serve you for six years. But in the seventh year, he shall go free, without paying anything… But if the servant declares,I love my master…and do not want to go free,’ then his master must… take him to the door or the doorpost andpierce his ear with an awl. Then he will be his servant for life. - Exodus 21:2-6

  14. Servant for Life: From Choice David Christ “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but a body you prepared for me” “Sacrifice and offering you did not desire, but my ears you have pierced” • Conclusions: • Christ had freedom to choose the ‘piercing’ or not • He chose to be sacrificed because he loved God • The sacrifice demonstrated lifelong service to God • Door to the House of God = Cross of Christ

  25. LITERAL RENDERING – you must decide what the text is saying. King James (KJV) The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. New King James (NKJV) The LORD your God in your midst, The Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. New American Standard (NAS) The LORD your God is in your midst, a victorious warrior. He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love, He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy. New International (NIV) The LORD, your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing.

  26. PARAPHRASE – Someone else has decided what the text is saying. Today’s English Version (TEB) The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a mighty savior; He will rejoice over you with gladness, and renew you in his love, He will sing joyfully because of you, as one sings at festivals. King James (KJV) The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing. Living Bible (LB) For the Lord your God has arrived to live among you. He is a mighty Savior. He will give you victory. He will rejoice over you with great gladness; he will love you and not accuse you. Is that a joyous choir I hear? No, it is the Lord himself exulting over you in happy song. New English Bible (NEB) The LORD your God is in your midst, like a warrior, to keep you safe; he will rejoice over you and be glad; he will show you his love once more; he will exult over you with a shout of joy as in days long ago.

Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end…” - Isaiah 9:6-7 He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him… Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer, and though the LORD makes his life a guilt offering… the will of the LORD will prosper in his hand… For he bore the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.- Isaiah 53:2,10,12

He ordered the furnace heated seven times hotter than usual and commanded some of the strongest soldiers in his army to tie up Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego and throw them into the blazing furnace.” - Daniel 3:19-20 “Weren’t there three men that we tied up and threw into the fire?” They replied, “Certainly, O king.” He said, “Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.” - Daniel 3:24-25

The king answered, The decree stands… Then they said to the king, Daniel… pays no attention to you… He still prays three times a day.” - Daniel 6:12-13 “My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight.” - Daniel 6:22

  38. DESTRUCTION OF GOD’S ENEMIES Joel (880-850 BC?) Let all who live in the land tremble, for the day of the LORD is coming. It is close at hand – a day of darkness and gloom, a day of clouds and blackness. Like dawn spreading across the mountains a large and mighty army comes, such as never was of old nor ever will be in ages to come. - Joel 2:1-2 Let the nations bestir themselves, and come up to the valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the nations round about. Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe. Go in, tread, for the wine press is full. The vats overflow, for their wickedness is great. - Joel 3:12-13

  40. THE PARABLE OF THE VINE Jonah (820-780 BC) Jonah was greatly displeased and became angry. - Jonah 4:1 But God said to Jonah, “Do you have a right to be angry about the vine?” “I do,” he said. “I am angry enough to die.” But the LORD said, “You have been concerned about this vine, though you did not tend it or make it grow. It sprang up overnight and died overnight. But Nineveh has more than a hundred and twenty thousand people who cannot tell their right hand from their left, and many cattle as well. Should I not be concerned about that great city?” - Jonah 4:9-11

  41. PROMISE OF EVERLASTING PEACE Micah (750-700 BC) In the last days the mountain of the LORD’s temple will be established as chief among the mountains.… they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruning hooks; nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more; but they shall sit every man under his vine and under his fig tree, and none shall make them afraid for the mouth of the LORD of hosts has spoken. - Micah 4:3-4

  42. What Do We Learn about God? • God’s plan is declared in prophecy: • To ‘restore’ His people, using a Messiah • To destroy His enemies • To establish an everlasting, peaceful Kingdom worldwide, with His Messiah as King

  46. Antichrist Little children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that the antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out from us that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us... Who then is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is the antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. - 1 John 2:18-19, 22

  47. Antichrist Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits, whether they are of God; because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God, and every spirit that does not confess that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is not of God. And this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard was coming, and is now already in the world. - 1 John 4:1-3

  48. Antichrist For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we do not lose those things we worked for, but that we may receive a full reward. - 2 John 1:7

  49. Antichrist - Summary 1.Someone in John's day (60-90 AD) 2.Group of people who "opposed" Christ 3. These people claimed to be "Christian", but broke off from those who followed Apostolic Christianity 4. Recognizable by their distinctive teaching, the denial that Jesus is the Christ, and that he was a human being like you and me WHO WERE THESE "ANTICHRISTS"?

  50. For Your Bible Study... Acts 15:1-5 2 Timothy 4:1-4 + 2 Peter 2:1-3 Galatians 1:6-9; 2:11-13; 4:9-21; 5:1-2, 3-12 Read carefully, then answer these questions: 1. Where did the opposition to Christianity in the first century come from? 2. What methods did the opposition use to corrupt Christian teaching? 3. Were they successful?
