  1. 5GHz Sky is FallingU-NII Spectrum Sharing La Jolla 13 Jul 2000 Denis Kuwahara Boeing Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  2. 5 GHz U-NII • JPL paper on sharing spectrum (02328R- SARs & U-NII_Devices@5.3GHz) • Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar SAR footprint = 181.5 kM2 approx 70 Mi2 • Single U-NII emitter w/ conditions • Antenna Pattern and Power Output • Limited co-existence possible Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  3. Single 100 mW Emitter • Xmt ant = -20dBi High Elevation Angle Gain (10 dBi Gain) • The WLAN signal is approximately 20 dB below sensor threshold Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  4. Single 250 mW Emitter • Xmt ant = -4dBi High Elevation Angle Gain (6 dBi Gain) • The WLAN signal is approximately 1 dB above sensor threshold Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  5. Single 250 mW Emitter • Xmt ant = -0dBi High Elevation Angle Gain (0 dBi Gain) • The WLAN signal is approximately 5 dB above sensor threshold Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  6. Conclusion • Earth Sensor Satellite folks are pessimistic • Best case is a few WLAN emitters within an 8 X 8 mile square, using 10 dB antennas • No case for WLANs with lower gain antennas • Given that: WLANs / RLANs are currently only a footnote for 5.15-.25GHz in ITU-R Radio Regs • Could WLANs be eliminated from ITU regs? Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  7. Required Action • Vendor participation is CRITICAL in ITU process to lobby for WLAN spectrum • Involvement in multiple regulatory regions • Participation in Working Parties, Task Groups, Joint Rapporteur Groups • RF Spectrum is a Shared Resource • Creation of a Joint International WLAN forum e.g. 3GPartnershipProject Denis Kuwahara, Boeing

  8. Questions • Thanks Denis Kuwahara, Boeing
