  1. Wave PartsWAVES

  2. 1. What is a wave? • A Wave is a disturbance that transfers ENERGY from place to place.

  3. 2. What is a medium? • A substance through which a wave can travel • Example of mediums: • gas – Air • liquid – Water • solid – rope

  4. 3. What are the 2 categories of waves? • Mechanical– waves that need a medium to transfer energy Example: sound wave must have a medium – sound does not travel through space • Electromagnetic – do not need a medium to transfer energy Examples: visible light, radio waves, microwaves CAN travel through space

  5. 4. What is a transverse wave? • Waves that move at right angles to the direction of the wave. • PERPENDICULAR – at right angles • Up and Down

  6. Transverse wave

  7. 5. What is a longitudinal wave? • Particles move in the same direction that the wave is traveling. • PARALLEL – same direction

  8. Longitudinal wave

  9. 6. What is an amplitude? • the distance the medium carrying the wave moves away from the rest position. • Height of the wave from the rest position.

  10. 7. What is wavelength? • Distance between two corresponding wave parts. • Distance from crest to crest, trough to trough, etc.

  11. 8. What is the frequency? • Number of complete waves that pass a given point in a certain amount of time. • Frequency is measured in Hertz. • As the frequency increases, the wavelength decreases and vice versa.
