NCA&T Industrial Advisory Board Research Committee Report 20 March 2007
Discussion Key Points • What is the long term goal? • Strengthen research to build teaching and academics? Or compete nationally as research powerhouse? • Committee doesn’t fully understand strengths and challenges of conducting research at A&T or how to best help build up the program: • Are buildings and facilities an issue? • Are research tools, equipment and IT an issue? • Who are their jewels (national level key researchers)? • Are they able to have some people dedicated to research (personnel policies, pay scales, ...)? • Are ITAR requirements a blocking points (foreign nationals, ...)? • What types of funding can we jointly go after? • Should we prioritize additional undergrad opportunities (such as SAE vehicles, AIChE competitions, ...)?
Recommendations • Understand A&T strengths, key researchers, challenges • Discussion with Dr. Monroe, his team and Dr. Radakrishnan • Review A&T research plan to understand where they want to go • IAB provide challenge and support • Understand if initial priority should be undergrad or graduate research? • Should we help them build or bring in a “rock star”? • What specific advantages can A&T build on as a small player? • Should IAB help A&T build partners (in UNC system or other)?
