  2. The New Deal and Women • Eleanor Roosevelt pursued equal treatment for women. • Frances Perkins: First woman to head an executive department, Secretary of Labor. Analyze photo.

  3. Women Continued • President Roosevelt assigned several women to government posts. • Men were still paid more. • Hostility existed against women in the workforce. • “Simply fire the women, who shouldn’t be working anyway, and hire the men. Presto! No unemployment.” Unknown Journalist

  4. African Americans & the New Deal • William Hastie was named the 1st AA federal judge. • The Black Cabinet was AA’s in gov’t. positions. • These advisors were led by Mary McLeod Bethune.

  5. African Americans Continued • The Black Cabinet was a symbol of rising AA influence in the U.S. government. • Caused many AA to leave the Republican Party. • Discrimination persisted. • One group that Pres. Roosevelt failed to help were AA sharecroppers.

  6. The Story of the Great Depression • Artists & painters depicted depression themes. • Songs & books were written about the struggles. • Dorothea Lange chronicled the depression through photos.

  7. Stories Continued • Americans continued to go to the movies. • Musicals & comedies helped people forget their problems for a short while. • Director Frank Capra incorporated comedy and emotions in his popular movies. • Radio was popular, airing news, talk shows, music, drama, & comedy. • Sports also helped people escape for a short time.
