There are several benefits to completing the award application process, including: • Governance and district performance assessment, plus feedback from judges • Attention drawn to positive aspects of your board and district success • The award can be used as a positive marketing product for your community

CUBE Annual Award Webinar Five Key Points to Ponder: • Work out a plan to compile information, gather data, and assess how board action has helped student achievement. • Focus your attention—can you demonstrate that you have made progress over a multi-year timeframe? Think about how your district has improved over the last five years.

CUBE Annual Award Webinar Five Key Points to Ponder: • Look at information from the previous year’s winners—Urban Advocate online, and other materials from the CUBE Annual Conference. http://tinyurl.com/CUBEaward2012 • The application should be well written and tell your district’s story. Seek help from the experts in your city.

CUBE Annual Award Webinar Focus on the Four Core Areas • Excellence in School Board Governance • Building Civic Capacity • Closing the Gap—Equity in Education • Demonstrated Success of Academic Excellence Remember: As the judging panel considers each application, it will seek clear evidence of excellence in each of the four core areas. It is imperative that the district’s description of success in each of the four core areas specifically demonstrate the role of the school board.

CUBE Annual Award Webinar Envision the End Result • Imagine your district getting positive attention from NSBA, CUBE, your state school boards association, and local and national media. • Think of the opportunities to promote your community—seek guidance and help from others in your city who can benefit from positive school board attention.

  10. CUBE Annual Award Webinar Next Steps • Look over your board’s mission statement, strategic plan, or other policies to demonstrate the progress you’ve made over the last five years. • Add finishing touches to your application packet.
