  4. 1683: Seiur de La Salle • Explored lower Mississippi • Named river valley “Louisiana” • 1763: Pierre Laclede & Auguste Chouteau • Founded St. Louis (fur trade outpost) • 1760: New France pop. = 65,000 (WHY?) • Main economic activity?

Jamestown • Early years were tragic (had gold fever) • England’s first permanent settlement in N.Amer. • Tobacco • 1620: Pilgrims founded Plymouth • Escaped religious persecution • 1629: Puritans formed the Massachusetts Bay Co. • 1642: over 25,000 migrated to New England
