  8. Explorer = person who was first to go/get somewhere And they are….

  9. Zheng He(DZUHNG HEH) • Last of the great Chinese explorers • Goal – promote trade/collect tribute • Brought exotic gifts to the Chinese emperor from as far away as Africa

  11. Vasco da Gama • First European to reach India by rounding the southern tip of Africa • This allowed the Portuguese to control trade routes in the area. .

  12. Christopher Columbus • Italian sailing under the flag of Spain .

  13. Was looking for way to India by sailing west, but found West Indies West Indies  Cuba, Haiti, Puerto Rico, etc.

  14. Christopher Columbus • Helped establish a permanent European settlement on the island of Hispaniola • today Haiti and Dominican Republic • Facilitated contact between Europe and the inhabitants of what would become the Americas. .

  15. Ferdinand Magellan • Sailed under the flag of Spain • First European to lead an expedition to successfully circumnavigate the earth. • Magellan died in a battle in the Philippines • only a small number of his expedition actually made it home to Spain. .
