Generational Challenges • Ageing society • Empowered and wealthy seniors • Declining proportion of Under-16’s • Rising immigrant birth rates • Intergenerational conflict – competing priorities
Individuals and Wealth • Personal networks • Life experience vs Job security • Rise of individualism • Growing wealth • Increase in large-scale philanthropy / CSR • Deepening inequality gap
UK Community Foundations Let’s not forget why people give to us: To strengthen communities through community development. It’s not just about money. We provide philanthropists a great mechanism for their local giving.
UK Community Foundations • UK views on growth • Philanthropy Review, June 2011 • 56% of British adults give monthly to charity. This can improve. • Current incentives are complex. Make them simple. • Less than 1% of employers operate payroll giving. Only 4% of the UK workforce give through payroll giving (USA 35%). • Those earning over £200,000 give £2 for every £1,000 earned. (USA: £90 for every £1,000 earned)
UK Community Foundations • UK views on growth • Beth Breeze, University of Kent • “Undergiving” and “Untapped Potential” • Transactional rather than transformational giving • Everyone could give more. Key factors: relating to a cause, knowing where to give and how they are stewarded by us! • The Sunday Times Rich List (2006, Beth’s PhD) • Of the 1,000 names, only 75 were ‘significant philanthropists’; 925 were not • If this increased to 200 in 2012, that still leaves 800
UK Community Foundations • UK views on growth • Joe Saxton, nfpSynergy • Giving needs to be intertwined with living • Two periods where income exceeds expenditure • The post-children, empty nesting lifestage • The moment careers take off, couples are created and houses bought
Money and lifestage Source: BHPS / The Future Foundation
UK Community Foundations • Where do we fit in? • The best model of sustainable local giving in the UK • Our knowledge of and contact with community organisations is key • Sustainability is provided by endowment funds at the core (and avoid dependency on match funds) • We must improve our ability to demonstrate change • In time, we will increase our discretionary grantmaking
UK Community Foundations • Growth will come from… • NOW: • Local • Community organisations • Sustainability = endowment • Demonstrate change • FUTURE: • Discretionary grantmaking => Community Leadership
Questions… What about social investment products? Or other products besides endowment funds? If donors request them, we need to listen and adapt. But… who will we be competing against? Do we need to expand our product portfolio, or focus even more on our core function?
