COSprint V2.7from COSprint is a distributed print spooling and output management application used by enterprises employing a UNIX, Linux or UNIX/Linux-with-Windows infrastructure
COSprint improves service levels by ……. • providing fine grained control of output, • providing a single point of administration and monitoring for the enterprise, leading to quicker problem resolution, • reducing call load on help desk by providing users with a web browser interface to monitor their own output requests, • providing comprehensive audit trails for all output, • providing comprehensive access security to improve compliance with recent legislation, • improving the reliability of complete documents reaching their destination.
COSprint produces a quick, positive RoI by……. • reducing the number of print servers required, • reducing the amount of administration time required to manage the output environment, • lowering the printer:employee ratio, • reducing WAN traffic, • reducing help desk calls, • reducing the volume of printed documentation and associated cost of supplies.
COSprint is ideal for . . . … a centralized, enterprise-wide output management service due to its ….. • highly scalable architecture designed to process many thousands of output jobs per hour, • high availability with FailOver capability, • load balancing, • fine grained, centralized control, • heterogeneity, accepting output from any operating system or application, • support for output to multiple devices including printers, fax, email, ftp and web, • easy to use interfaces including a web browser based job monitor for end users.

COSprint is network-aware so that …. • you can submit an output request • from any server or workstation • to any printer on the network • through any COSprint Server • you can monitor the status of any output request • from any workstation • through any COSprint Server • you can administer, maintain, and configure COSprint from any workstation . . . with all activities subject to assigned access rights
COSprint configuration - COSprint Server Principal node • COSprint Server is loaded on all nodes in the domain that will process output jobs • Object database is distributed across the nodes • Principal node maintains synchronization data • COSprint Client is loaded on all UNIX/Linux nodes that submit output jobs UNIX/Linux Client COSprint domain Windows Service Subordinate node
COSprint FailOver provides redundancy for mission critical output management environments Software only failover which can be augmented/replaced by high availability hardware Typically used by any organization which cannot afford to lose printing resource for even a short period of time COSprint FailOver
COSprint Client provides remote print job submission and print job control on UNIX/Linux nodes which are not running a copy of COSprint Server The COSprint Client is typically used where lpd might otherwise have been considered, but avoids the user organization having to define printers and queues on every remote server for lpd Allows users to query their queues and jobs on remote COSprint servers and to view the print jobsfor which they are authorized Provides submit and delete functions Provides simple load balancing and FailOver capability COSprint Client
COSprint print services for Windows • Printer services for a mixed UNIX and Windows environment based on Samba/CiFS protocol • COSprint print services for Windows gives users a gateway to all printers configured under COSprint Domains • Windows users see all their available COSprint queues in Network Neighborhood from within their Windows’ apps. • Windows users can view, monitor and manage their print jobs • No software on the PC – COSprint print services for Windows uses Microsoft’s Server Message Block (SMB) and Common Internet File System (CiFS) protocols

COSprint user interface • COSMOS User Interface for Windows • X Window System • BMC PATROL console • Web browser • Command line • Via standard Windows print menu (print requests only)
COSprint user interface for Windows • Replaces need for X emulator on Windows workstation • Native Windows “look and feel” • Lightweight client/server architecture for use over dial-up lines • Runs on Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000, 2003 and XP
COSprint Web browser user interface • Web browser interface • Job (print request) submission • Job and queue monitoring • Full access controls • Offloads user requests from Helpdesk
COSprint configurationlogical • Primary management resources • queues • printers (output devices) • formats • Access control objects • users • classes • resource capabilities • interface capabilities
COSprint configurationlogical – the big picture users output jobs(output requests) queues #1 #2 #3 #4 #5 #6 #7 #n queue filters(optional) device filters(optional) output devices
COSprint resources — queues • A queue is a logical resource for accepting new output jobs and delivering them to their destination • A queue is always the target of the submit process • The queue delivers output jobs to one or more printers or other output device • The number of queues is unlimited • Queues are set up and named to suit the enterprise • to match departments, business functions, etc • A queue has a control at both ends • open/close at the input end • start/stop at the delivery end
COSprint resources — output devices • An output device is a logical resource which is mapped to a physical device e.g. a printer, fax modem or ftp server • An output device is the ultimate destination of output jobs and accepts output jobs from one or more queues • The number of output devices is unlimited • Printers are set up and named to suit the enterprise, e.g. • departmental, work-group • geographical - building, floor • central - bulk output in the data-center • A printer may be stopped and/or started at any time by a COSprint administrator
COSprint resources — formats • A format is logical resource – attached to a print job – which specifies initial printer attributes, e.g. • stationery, paper tray to be used • page size and orientation • default font • A COSprint format does notinterfere with formatting com-mands embedded in thedocument • The number of pre-defined formats is unlimited and they may be named without restriction • Format definitions accept codes which have been pre-defined in a terminfo file
Integration with Adobe Central (JetForm) and other forms packages • Third party forms packages are incorporated as filters • COSprint merges output file with form before sending to output device • Support for Adobe Central on both UNIX and Windows • Requires OSM Secure Communications protocol running on the Adobe Central server
COSprint resourcesReport distribution – COSreport The automated report management and distribution component built into COSprint • COSreport allows you to • schedule report generation • define secure views for recipients • distribute views to recipient destinations • Distribution methods include • COSprint queues • fax • email • file transfer • Supports the online storage of multiple report generations
COSprint eXpress delivers fast and reliable printing in point of sale (PoS) environments Local print jobs may be printed immediately by local printers to avoid the possible delay of using a print queue Dedicated PoS printers may be excluded from the list of printers available for use by normal (non PoS) print jobs eXpress has its own monitor component to quickly identify printers which have become unserviceable Typical uses include retail checkouts, car-rental offices and airline ticket issuers COSprint resourcesCOSprint eXpress - direct ticket printing
COSprint access controlrole-based security • COSprint administrators define a number of user classes, e.g. • user • trusted user • operator • senior operator • manager • Each class is granted a set of access capabilities • interface capabilities • resource capabilities • Each capability either restricts or enables a particular access right • Every user is assigned to a User Class and inherits its access rights
COSprint access controlcapabilities • Interface capabilities • assigned to static resources – menus and functionality • Resource capabilities • assigned to dynamic resources – queues and printers • allow access controls to follow the organization’s structure • Available capability profiles • standard, as delivered • custom, as required
COSprint functions - overview COSprint functions are grouped into thefollowing four categories: • Submission • Monitoring • Controlling of all print jobs, and • Configuration of all resources across a collection of distributed systems
COSprint functionsuser – submitting print jobs • Forms-based job submission for interactive use • graphical user interface • Job attributes may be • specified at submit-time • inherited from an attribute set • Command-line job submission • compatible with lp and lpr • Posix compliant • employed by expert users • supports application integration
