The Town • The news that Kino has a great pearl spread through the town. • People started dreaming and desiring to get it. • The beggars, the doctor, and even the priest knew that Kino had the Pearl of the World, and they were jealous
How Kino reacts • He gets really excited with the treasure he has found and hope of having a prosperous life arises in him. • He wants to give Coyotito an education, have awedding with Juana, and even buy a rifle.
Later….. • The doctor went to Kino’shouse in order to pretend that he was interestedin curing the baby. • The doctor gives Coyotito a poisonous drink so suddenly Coyotito becomes sicker than before. After that, the doctor comes again but this time he “cures” the baby.
Ending of Chapter 3 • The doctor figured out where the pearl was hidden. • He leaves the house but then he sends two thieves to steal the pearl. • Kino wakes up, has a confrontation with the thieves, and avoids the robbery. He uses his knife to defend himself and hurts someone else.
Analysis • By finding the pearl Kino obtains a feeling of having something invaluable which brings a great responsibility on how to use it but at the same time fear to protect it. • Kino turns into a paranoid, suspicious person, that wants to defend what he owns, and wants to get out from the horrible situation in which he has been all his life.
Analysis • What happens is that Kino is full with hope to provide a better living for his family, especially with education for Coyotito because education wouldprovide an escape from the oppression. • Juana understands that the fortune the pearl brings is shadowed by the feelings it provokes among people: in the town, greediness; and in Kino, covet.
