Research Paper • Title Page & Table of Contents • Abstract • Introduction/Background: Create an outline • Materials & Methods • Results • Discussion • Conclusions • Acknowledgments • References
Introduction Outline Structure • Organize resources and note cards according to your main points. • Introduction includes: • Interesting opening • Need for the research • Overview of the scientific background, prior research • Paragraph Two includes: • background of your topic • foundation of your argument • definitions needed for clear understanding of the topic
Sentence Outline Structure • Final Paragraph • prove the need for the research • thesis statement/hypothesis/engineering goal • Main Points include: • details from your SOURCES • direct quotations • paraphrased ideas • your voice throughout the paragraph
Points to Remember • References: DS evenly throughout, alphabetical order, 2nd line indented 5 spaces • Transitions: Write a clear transition statement to connect paragraphs. • Cite: All direct quotations/paraphrased information (Smith, 2005 ) or (Brown, 2007, para. 4) • Format: Every A needs B and 1 needs 2 for outline • Plagiarism: Turnitin.com will identify all work from another source and will result in a 0.
Source Weaving Source Weaving is the main skill demonstrated in the writing of a research paper. No more than TWO of the same source in a row. Never include pages in a row with documentation from the same source; this shows poor research and will result with a grade beginning at a “C”.
International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) Rules & Procedures: • Review ISEF Document Library (search online) • Complete the ‘Rules Wizard’ to determine forms needed • Review the guidelines for the display board • Completed ISEF forms are due by midtermsand are signed by student, parent(s), scientist, and other professionals International Science & Engineering Fair Forms
Seminar: December 11/12, 2012 Mandatory seminar • Four annotated bibliographies (last set!) • Journals entries • Reflection 2.1 (due Mon, Dec 3) • Time & Place of Dec. Presentation • Hard copy of the PPT with six slides per page (Dec 11) • Include ALL updates on the PPT • Pre-outline Organizer of Literature Review/Background
