LIBRARY RESEARCH SKILLS FOR SEMINAR 19 October 2012 by Mdm Norzelatun Rodhiah Hazmi, IIUM Library norzelatunrh@iium.edu.my
Outline • How to Develop an Information Search Strategy for Research • Searching for Journal Articles • Databases – Online Version • Digital Services - IIUM Publication • Library Catalog – Print version • Journal Citation
1. IDENTIFY THE KEYWORDS CONTAIN IN YOUR TOPIC • Example: • The Application of 4G Technology in Communication Refer to dictionaries, encyclopedias, or textbooks to obtain a better understanding
1. IDENTIFY THE KEYWORDS CONTAIN IN YOUR TOPIC • Example: • The Application of 4G Technology in Communication Refer to dictionaries, encyclopedias, or textbooks to obtain a better understanding
2. EXAMPLES OF ALTERNATIVE KEYWORDS Example: The Application of 4G Technology in Communication
3. COMBINING TERMS – BOOLEAN SEARCHING While searching in OPAC or Databases to find journal articles – construct search queries using Boolean AND – to narrow a search OR – to broaden a search NOT – to exclude
Combining 2 keywords – using AND network technical communication technical communication AND network AND
Narrowing down a search – using AND network network technical communication innovative technical communication innovative AND AND
Broaden a search using OR cellular mobile phone mobile phone OR cellular
Excluding terms not needed – using NOT technology NOT innovation innovation technology
How to narrow a search ? • If too many results are found: • choose a more specific or precise keyword • e.g. ‘equalizers’ instead of ‘circuits’ • add another concept to your search, use AND • e.g‘equalizers’ AND ‘electric filters’ AND ‘network’
How to broaden a search ? • If only a few results are found: • Try searching with alternative keywords • Choose a broader, less specific terms • e.g‘transistors’ instead of ‘phototransistors’ • Select another information source, book, database, index or encyclopedia
4. Extend the power and precision of boolean searching via truncations, wildcards or double quotation marks Example of wildcards: Use ? to replace a letter or letters in a word. e.ganaly?ewill pick up analyze and analyse e.gcol?rwill pick up color and colour
Example of truncations: Use * to truncate a word: e.g.carbon* will pick up: carbon, carbonates, carbonization, carbonylation, etc. e.g.cell* will pick up: cell, cells, cellulose, etc.
Example of double quotation marks: “enzyme degradation” – the database should look for an exact match of the word “product” –get exact match of the word without stem variations (base word plus varying endings including plurals, -ion, etc.
STEPS IN CONDUCTING RESEARCH Decide your topic Identify the key concepts or ideas contain in your topic List alternative keywords for each concept construct search queries using Boolean Use truncations, wildcards or double quotation marks while searching online databases
