4. Trades and Apprenticeships • www.itabc.ca • Foundation Programs: teach the basic knowledge & skills to enter a trade. Gain some experience and make it easier to find an employer who will sponsor your apprenticeship • Training to prepare for entry-level employment in the trade area of choice • Where? BCIT, Kwantlen Polytechnic University, Vancouver Community College • Most apprenticeships take 4 years to complete depending on the trade

College • Certificate • Generally takes 3 months to 1 year to complete depending on the program • Diploma • Generally takes 2 years to complete full time • University Transfer program • Best route should be planned with an academic advisor at the college. 2 years = Associate Degree • University Transfer programs have priority for registration over new students and the GPA required is usually lower Degree • Colleges offer a limited number of degrees which can be completed at the college as well: Kwantlen, Douglas, Langara

6. University • General admission requirements + specific faculty requirements and GPA’s need to be looked at under “undergraduate admissions” • Transfers between Faculties are allowed • Each course is 3 credits or 30 credits a year approximately, with the goal of an undergraduate degree • Postgraduate, doctoral degrees

7. Application to a BC Post Secondary 1. Decide what faculty, degree, or programs are going to be applied for. Know many programs/degrees have some flexibility in the first year. www.educationplanner.ca is a good website for BC Public post secondary institutions. 2. Apply on-line. Some applications request a Personal Profile or supplemental application 3. Shortly after application, go to the schools financial aid web page to see if there are any scholarships/awards of interest. 4. Ensure grades are reported at Term 2. A Delta Access Online course should be 50% complete by the application deadlines.

8. Application cont’d… • 5. Allow the Ministry of Education to release the school marks to the college, by going on-line and completing a PSI form. • 6. If you entering trades, book a pre-test to reduce wait times. Speak with trades advisors at colleges. • 7. Once you have term 2 marks, based on the English Mark decide on the LPI. If in doubt, write the LPI. • 8. April-June: Offers will come. Continue to apply for bursaries, scholarships, etc. Take tours or visit campuses. Email or meet with an advisor at the college, to confirm course selection.

9. Post-Secondary Admission Kwantlen Polytechnic University Course selection will be based on date the application was submitted and when the application fee was received. Apply as early as you can. General admission requires English 12 with a C, but depending on the program, there will be other requirements. Application Start Date: November 1, 2013 until program fills NursingProgram: Apply for September 2014 intake – Nov 1 – Mar 31 Apply for January 2015 intake – Mar 1 – July 31 Recommended students apply to both intakes: only 16 seats per intake are dedicated to high school students. GPA 95% Douglas College Students are accepted with general entry requirements (English 12 C+). The website has great information and it is easy to get a “real” person on the phone if needed. Each Career Program has their own application cut-off date. Open applications can be until the week school starts (ie Sept 2014) Application start date: September 15, 2013 until program fills

10. Post-Secondary Admission British Columbia Institute of Technology Each program has specific requirements. Entrance is competitively based. Look at program of interest and then at entrance or program requirements. Application Start Date: November 15, 2013 – UNTIL PROGRAM FILLS Pre-Tests: Students in trades programs should write pre-tests for Math and/or English to access the waitlist before graduation, otherwise have to wait until June 2014. Trades Discovery Program for Men & Women 16 week training program in approximately 20 different technical and trades fields Capilano University You must use www.applybc.ca website to apply for Capilano University. Each Career Program has specific admission requirements, including an Minimum GPA and a possible additional step to the application process. Application Start Date: September 15, 2013 Application Deadline: March 31, 2014

Post-Secondary Admission Simon Fraser University (both campuses) • Application start date: October 2013 • Students will self-report grades in December (term 1) • Admission Deadline: February 28, 2014 University of British Columbia • Application start date: September 2013 • Students will self-report grades in March 2013 (term 2) • Admission Deadline: February 3, 2014 (Entrance Award: Dec 10, 2013) University of Victoria • Application start date: September 2013 • Students may self-report grade Final grade 11 marks when they apply for early acceptance (85-90%) or self-report grades (12) in February 2014 • Admission Deadline: Feb 28, 2014

Apply BC-application service of BC www.applybc.ca • Apply BC is an online registration for almost every BC public post secondary institutions (universities no longer accept paper applications) • Create an account you can access again later • Apply to several institutions at the same time. But you will need to select a faculty and a back up faculty incase you do not meet the GPA for admission • Get instant notification your application has been received by the intended school • You will need a credit card to pay the application fee which can cost $40+

How a parent can help with application preparation: • What programs, or what degree & faculty will your child apply to? • What are the institutions/colleges that your child wants (1,2, 3) • Have they checked the admission requirements? Before you go on-line, have available: • Grade 11& 12 courses and/or grades • Credit card • Students’ Social Insurance Number • Personal Education Number/ Student Card *If institution asks for paper transcripts, provide these, (can obtain at school) and send via their instructions (mail/fax)

16. Scholarships • Colleges and universities all have Entrance Scholarships. They are based on GPA, criteria and application information will be on the school website, typically these have an early deadline • Community Scholarships are provided by small & large corporations, for-profit and non-profit organizations, sports organizations & diverse community groups, associations and unions This type of scholarship is most numerous and accessible www.studentawards.com www.burnsviewsecondarycareercentre.weebly.com • Graduation Programs Examinations Scholarships are given by the provincial government to students in grades 10-12 that have the highest provincial exams marks – vouchers to be used for post secondary tuition $1000 to 5000 students $2500 to 20 students with top marks

Bursaries & Awards • Bursaries are both merit based and based on financial need, most post secondary institutions have bursaries to close the gap between financial need and available governemtn assistance • Dogwood District Authority Awards are to recognize superior achievement in a non-academic area such as Visual Arts, Applied Skills, Athletics, Second languages, Community Service, Trades & Technical. Worth $1000 each • There is a listing of available scholarships, awards and bursaries in my office
