Objective of the project • Investigate the scale, potential and the opportunities for South-South trade in services through various modes of supply as well as its impact on the direction of commodity trade. • Complement the on-going study on South-South goods trade
General methodology Combine • Statistical analyses with • Theoretical analyses • Studies on services barriers and • Case studies on intra-developing country trade to derive some general findings about the determinants and the potential for South-South trade.
Statistical analyses • Estimates of intra-developing services trade based on the recent OECD database on trade in services by partner country data, FDI statistics, mirror statistics, and, to the extent possible, national statistics for selected developing countries. • Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCAs) and trade flow analyses based on IMF data.
Policy needs and services statistics • Partner country data • Permit the estimation of intra-developing countries trade • Balance of payments statistics (sectoral and labour-related data) and additional FDI and FATS statistics • Permit the estimation of modal distribution of services trade and the calculation of various indicators (RCA, indicative trade, etc.)
