  1. RPC Upscope : An overview with Indian perspective L. M. Pant Nuclear Physics Division Bhabha Atomic Research Centre L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  2. The first level trigger based on the RPCs provides CMS with the most precise timing in both the barrel and endcap region Six concentric layers of chambers are used in the barrel part, while four layers have been foreseen in total for the end caps to cover a rapidity up to =2.1 L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  3. barrel end-cap end-cap CMS Present end-cap RPC coverage upto  3 layers High  region FRPC upgrade 2011(?) 666 cm Longitudinal section of CMS pseudorapidity,  = - ln tan(/2)  Is the polar angle of the particle wrt the beam axis Trigger detector RPC’s : both Barrel & End-Cap :  = 0 to 2.1 Tracking detector Barrel : Drift Tubes :  = 0 to 1.2 End-cap : Cathode Strip Chambers :  = 0.9 to 2.1 RPCs are segmented in strips of   x   ~ 0.1 x (5/16)o which makes possible a pT measurement of ~ 50 GeV L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  4. =0 due to insufficient funding availability, only three layers were built in the endcap which provided a limited rapidity coverage up to =1.6 =1.2 =1.6 China end-cap end-cap barrel section in 5 wheels Pakistan L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  5. chambers could be constructed later on so that coverage of the full rapidity range of the original design could be achieved The key element of this proposal is to construct the 4th layer of RPCs in the endcap L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  6. simulated trigger efficiency plot : Piet Verwilligen the 4th layer is in between  = 1.2 and 1.6 small dips are due to an interface between different rolls in one chamber  = 1.24  = 1.42 L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  7. The key element of this proposal is to construct the 4th layer of RPCs in the endcap =0 =1.2 =1.6 China end-cap end-cap barrel section in 5 wheels Pakistan India & Belgium L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  8. CMS has decided to split the up-scope project into two distinct phases : Phase 1 : completion of the low  part ( < 1.6) Phase 2 : (earlier called as upgrade) completion of the high part (1.6 <  < 2.1) L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  9. Second layer of gas-gaps with gas flow pipes L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  10. Bakelite gas-gaps enclosed inside the Faraday Cage April '2008 L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  11. Fully assembled RPC with front end electronics, gas flow pipes, cooling pipes, HV and signal cables L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  12. L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  13. 96 65 64 33 32 1 Not dead channels, problem with shift registers in the electronics Strip profile of cosmic events : 5K triggers RPC # 6, run No. 5135, 5K triggers at 9.4 kV L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  14. presented during RPC-2010 at GSI L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  15. presented during RPC-2010 at GSI L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  16. Expected financial contribution for low  upgrade 4.5 MCHF 18% India L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  17. ~1000 kCHF per sector ( end caps) ~ 800 kCHF per sector ( end caps)  ~ 1.2  ~ 1.6 Cost per sector for low  (RE2/2, RE2/3) L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  18. L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  19. RPCs to be built for low  upgrade 144 + 56 extra = 200 BelgiumIndia 100 + 100 = 200 RPCs L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  20. The manpower to run this facility will be provided by the respective institutes when their detectors are being tested Chamber Assembly Sites Mumbai, Chandigarh L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  21. Responsibitities of each collaborating unit L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  22. July’10 Aug ’10 Oct ’10 Dec ’10 Dec ’11 We are here HPL production Start up for production of gas-gaps, mechanics, electronics Assembly sites to be ready Testing, Comissioning & Complete Installation The road map HPL : 2 months are required for the production of 600 foils x (1620 x 3200 mm2) = 3110 m2 Gas-Gaps : production of 600 gas-gaps for 200 chambers would take about 12 months L. M. Pant India-CMS Meeting, BARC 29th July 2010

  23.
