Izulu Orphan Projects is an NGO that deals with Orphans and Widows who are affected by HIV/Aids. We school and provide uniforms for 995 orphans. We support their 389 villages with basic food and clothing. We have an Orphan’s Christmas Party every year. In 2002 80 people attended. In 2009 OVER 1600 people attended!!!
Our 995 Orphans make up the 389 Orphaned Villages we have on file. IOP is unique in that it supports the Orphans in their own homes, thus they are able to maintain control of their land. Our Orphaned Villages span a Total Area of 25km wide by 40km long. Caregivers need to collect their monthly Food Hand Outs. They often walk for hours to do so. Currently only 40 of our 389 Orphaned Villages have any kind of Formal Employment. These Villages have one Person who has a job, and mostly they work as Domestic Servants or Security Guards and as such earn approximately R1500 per month. This means that 90% of the families we support are unemployed and rely on Government Grants.
An Orphaned Village consists of A Father who has Died and Mother is HIV+. or both Parents have Died and Orphans are taken care of by their Grandmother or an Aunt and often they take care of themselves. There will be a separate Huts for Sleeping, Cooking and sometimes an ancestral hut. Most villages have a long-drop Toilet.
An example of a village This lady in the background is the caregiver for 7 children. One is her own and the others belong to all her deceased siblings. Her mother has died of Aids and she is now the only remaining adult and she has Aids herself.
