  2. Steps for Analytical Case Analysis • Read thoroughly • Define central issue • Define firm’s goals • Identify problem constraints that limit solutions • Identify all the relevant alternatives • Select the best alternative • Develop an implementation plan

  3. Step: Read thoroughly • Read quickly to get the overview • Read again, as many times as necessary, to understand the detail

  4. Step: Define the Central Issue • Many issues exist • Prioritize into the important and the trivial • Among the important issues, what is critical? • Identify by functional area, and specific problem

  5. Step: Define the Firm’s Goals • These help guide the choices a firm makes • Revenue? • Net income? • Maintain workforce? • Balanced scorecard? • If there are contradictory goals • Identify • Resolve if possible • Clarify is can’t be resolved

  6. Step: Identify Constraints • Examples • Not enough resources • Production capacity • Wrong people • People in wrong positions • Competitors • Relationships

  7. Step: Identify Relevant Alternatives • Many – think about many, focus on relevant ones • Alternatives often suggested in case • Expand that list

  8. Step: Choose the Best Alternative • Research questions and issues • Use sources other than the case • List advantages and disadvantages of alternatives • Present the logic behind your recommendation • Justification is more than your opinion

Step: Choose the Best Alternative • All information needed is not in the case • Choose based on • theory and principles from classes • observations about the situation • state in the context of goals and constraints • Develop and present the logic behind your recommendation • Justification is more than your opinion
