Unit II: The Cold War (1945-60) VS. Capitalism Communism
WHAT IS THE COLD WAR? • The U.S. and the Soviet Union became increasingly hostile towards one another after WWII. • This led to an era of confrontation and competition between the U.S. and the Soviet Union that lasted from 1945-1990.
Communism vs. Capitalism • Communism explained….. • “a system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state” and “public/government ownership over major means of production” • Cow example….. • You have two cows. You have to take care of them, but the government takes all the milk and gives you enough to live. • Capitalism explained….. • “Free enterprise economy, in which most of the means of production are privately owned” • Cow example…. • You have two cows, you sell one and buy a bull, and build a herd of cows
Some background info…. FDR never wanted a world war ever again April 25th, 1945; (FDR died of a stroke on April 12) representatives from 50 nations met in San Francisco to organize the UNITED NATIONS 11 nations were part of security council 5 permanent members: Britain, France, China, Soviet Union and the United States……..
