If tax is 9% and he paid with a $10.00 bill, how much CHANGE will he get back? • Cost of Items: 1.20 + 3.50 = $4.70 • Tax: $4.70 • 0.09 = .423 • Total Cost: $4.70 + .423 = $5.123 • Change: 10.00 – 5.123 = $4.877 ≈ $4.88

  3. Manipulating Equations Equations can sometimes look very confusing. 4x – 12 = 2x + 8 In these cases, we must manipulate the equation to fit our needs! We must still follow the same rules we have learned before. “What you do to one side, you must do to the other.”

  4. Take Notes On This!!! We want to move all of the terms with variables to the left and the constant terms (numbers) to the right! 4x – 12 = 2x + 8 What should we move?

  5. Take Notes On This!!! 4x – 12 = 2x + 8 + 12 + 12 4x = 2x + 20 – 2x – 2x 2x = 20 x = 10 Let’s move the – 12 to the right! Let’s move the 2x to the left! When we move an ENTIRE term, we add or subtract the term. We are moving the entire term, 2x, so we subtract 2x!

  6. Take Notes On This!!! 5x + 3 = -3x – 13 – 3 – 3 5x = – 3x – 16 + 3x + 3x 8x = -16 x = -2 What do we do first? What do we do next? Solve!!!!

  7. Take Notes On This!!! -4x + 6 = -7x + 15 – 6 – 6 -4x = -7x + 9 + 7x + 7x 3x = 9 x = 3

  8. Ehhh…Do what you want… 7x – 10 = 2x + 10 + 10 7x = 2x + 10 – 2x – 2x 5x = 10 x = 2

  9. On Your Own… Solve. 1. 5x + 15 = 2x x = -5 2. -2x – 9 = 4x + 9 x = -3 3. 4(x – 5) = x + 1 x = 7
