EEMS Title 1 Welcomes You! Parent Orientation 2012
What is Title 1? • Title 1 is a federally funded educational program with a goal of helping students make progress and achieve academic success in communities that are considered to be at an economic disadvantage. • Title 1 serves students in reading and math in a small-group setting.
How are Title 1 students selected? • At the end of the school year, teachers refer students in their class that may benefit from extra practice of classroom concepts in a small group. Student data (grades, SOL and/or PALS scores) often influences the referral. • Students with the highest scores are placed into the Title 1 program. • Unfortunately, Title 1 teachers cannot serve all students. Once small groups have been made, remaining students are placed on a Title 1 waiting list.
What does my child miss? • During our time, Title 1 students DO NOT miss classroom instruction. • When students work with Title 1 teachers, other students have enrichment or remediation time.
What does my child do in Title 1? * T1 works on the skills and concepts that students are learning in class, with a special focus on difficult concepts and skills. * Students sing songs, play games, use the computer, work with manipulatives, read fun books, or whatever it takes to ensure students are learning!
