  2. Johan Sebastian Bach was born in Eisenach, Germany in March 21, 1685. Bach’s father was a town musician. Bach came from a long line of composers, like over 300 years' worth of Bach's all worked as professional musicians.

  3. Bach’s Early Life • Bach was the youngest of 8 children. • When Bach was ten his parents died. • Bach was cared for by his older brother.

  4. Bach’s Early Life • Bach’s older brother was a church organist. • Bach eventually became a very good organist.

  5. Bach’s various careers. • In 1707, Bach was hired to play for special services at a church in Muhlhausen. • While in Weimar, Bach was appointed court organist. • Bach earned the title of Konzertmeister (concert master) by the Duke and because of his salary increases.

  6. Bach’s various careers. • Bach earned another prestigious title of Kapellmeister (chapel master). • Bach then accepted an offer to work for Prince Leopold of Cothen in 1717. • After his days in Cöthen, Bach accepted the job as Kantor at the Thomasschule.

  7. Bach’s family • Bach was married two times. • Bach first married his cousin Maria Barbara Bach in 1707. • They eventually had seven children. • Maria died in 1720.

  8. Bach’s family • Bach’s second marriage was to Anna Magdalena Wilckein 1721. • Anna Magdalena was the daughter of a town trumpeter. • Bach and Anna had thirteen children together!

  9. Bach’s family. • Bach had twenty children with his two wives. • But ten of them died in infancy. • Four of them went on to be well known composers.

  10. Bach had learned to play the organ, the harpsichord, and how to compose music because of his father, his brother, and his schools teachings. But mostly he was self taught. • Bach's works were hardly known in his lifetime, they weren't published until a century after his death. • Bach spent the rest of his life in Leipzig in1750, he died of a stroke.
