Examples of Approved Project 1Health Sector Reform Program in Belize • Approved in 2000. IDB: $9.8 million. Total: 19 million. • The project aims to improve the efficiency, equity and quality of health care through three components: a) sector restructuring; b) services rationalization and improvement; and c) support the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF). • Consultants : a) design, procure, and supervise the execution of projects; b) procure and supervise the delivery and installation of medical equipment; c) technical assistance in hospital management and pharmaceutical study; d) support the NHIF in expenditure survey, financial and management control systems; and more. • Goods and Equipment: Procurement of vehicles, ambulances, medical equipment, computer equipment and central laboratory equipment.
Examples of Approved Project 2Health Sector Development in Costa Rica • Approved in 2003. IDB: $6.3 million. Total: 8 million. • The program strengthens the strategic and operational capacity of the Ministry of Health in its efforts to regulate, inspect, supervise and control health risk factors in order to reduce the global burden of disease and disability caused by unhealthy consumption and behavioral patterns. • Consultants : a) Studies in policy making and public opinion, b) Preparation of policy instruments; c) Dissemination of the policy instruments to beneficiaries through seminars and workshops; and more. • Goods and Equipment: Procurement of computers, office equipment, software applications, equipment for the inspection of radioisotopes and drinking water samples and specialized laboratory services for the analysis of water quality and food safety.
Examples of Approved Project 3Reorganization of the National Health System in Haiti • Approved in 1998. IDB: $22.5 million. Total: 25 million. • The program supports the government’s efforts to improve the health status of the Haitian population by enhancing the quality and equity of health services provided by public and private institutions in the national health system. • Consultants : a) Preparation of plans of operations and creation of the information and accounting systems; b) Dissemination on the program to relevant Ministry units through trainings and workshop; c) Annual formal external audits; d) Technical assistance in governance, financial management, information systems, human resources management, regulation and quality control; and more . • Goods and Equipment: Procurement of medical equipment, office furniture, computer network equipment and software and vehicles.
Examples of Approved Project 4Support for Regulation of Private Health Providers in Nicaragua • Approved in 2000. IDB: $1. 2 million. (technical cooperation) • The project supports and promote private-sector participation in the health-care services market by improving and broadening existing regulations and creating a more favorable investment climate conducive to contracting with such agencies as the Ministry of Health and the Nicaraguan Social Security Administration. • Consultants : a) design, procure, and supervise the execution of projects; b) design and implementation of program in information technology applications; c) personal training and more. • Goods and Equipment: Procurement of computer and other types of equipment.
Examples of Projects in the Pipeline 1 Health Sector Strengthening Project in Honduras • IDB: $16 million. Total: 16 million. • The program supports the country in the reduction of maternal and infantile mortality and undernourishment, as the elements most critical to advance the goals through the Poverty Reduction Strategy as indicated by the objectives of the Millennium Development Goals. • Anticipated Procurement: to be announced. Expansion of Health Services Coverage in Nicaragua • IDB: $30 million. Total: $33.5 million.
Examples of Projects in the Pipeline 2Health and Pension for Government Workers Health and Pension for Government Workers Project in Mexico • IDB: $300 million. Total: 300 million. • The program supports the Institute of Social Security Services of Government Workers in its plan for an institutional reform. The program aims to encourage changes in the organization of its health and pension funds, and will include changes in the structure of all sectors of the institution’s business. • Anticipated Procurement: to be announced. Modernization of Social Security in Panama • IDB: $10 million
