Monomyth • Joseph Campbell • The basic stages that almost every hero-quest goes through (no matter what culture the myth comes from).
Hero’s Quest/Journey • A character must go on a journey or travel. • The hero goes through many trials and dangers, in which he must face his fears in order to restore happiness, fertility, justice, or harmony to his community. • The hero often must endure a wasteland or underworld where he/she is “reborn” before returning home.
Archetypes • Carl Jung • The recurring images, patterns, and ideas from dreams and myths across various cultures.
Deus ex Machina • “god from a machine” • A plot device whereby a seemingly unsolvable problem is suddenly and abruptly resolved by the contrived and unexpected intervention of some new event, character, ability, or object.
Allegory • A literary device in which characters or events in a literary, visual, or musical art form represent or symbolize ideas and concepts. • An allegory conveys its hidden message through symbolic figures, actions, imagery, and/or events.
