  2. Description • Veterinarians care for the heath of animals. They diagnose, treat, and research medical conditions and diseases of pets, livestock, zoo animals, race tracks, and laboratories.

  3. Education/Training • 4 years to complete including classrooms, laboratories, and clinical components. • Must complete a D.V.M. or a V.M.D. degree at college. • To better prepare after college take 1 year internship.

  4. Salary • 2010 median pay – $82,040 per year (39.44 per hour.)

  7. Duties of Career • Examine animals to diagnose heath problems. • Perform surgery on animals. • Treat and dress wounds • Test for and vaccinate against diseases. • Operate medical equipment. ex. X-ray machine. • Prescribe medication. • Euthanize animals. • Advise owners about general care, medical conditions, and treatments.

Interesting facts • Vets may have to respond to emergencies outside of scheduled work hours. • They spend much of their time dealing with people rather than animals. • Veterinarians who treat horses or food animals must travel between their offices and farms or ranches. • They work outdoors in all kinds of weather and may have to perform surgery, often under unsanitary conditions.
