Author’s Purpose P.I.E • Author’s write stories for many different reasons: • Persuade • Inform • Entertain • Look at the titles and covers of these books. Can you guess what the author’s purpose might be for writing them? How do you know?
Author’s Purpose: To Inform • Characteristics that show the Author’s Purpose: • Gives the reader real information. • May include diagrams, cut aways, and real life pictures. • May include definitions. • May tell the reader how to do something.
Author’s Purpose: To Entertain • The pictures might be silly looking. • The book is fiction. • It tells a story. • It usually makes the reader laugh. • It does not include real information.
Author’s Purpose: To Persuade • Gives facts and opinions. • May include information from an “expert”. • Tells how the author feels about the subject. • Tries to convince the reader to do something or think a certain way.
