  1. Newsletter 7 March 27, 2009 News from 1A44 Mrs. Winter’s KG Kids Language Arts News The kids were inspired by Margriet Ruurs’ visit. She was so kind to the children and encouraging to our budding writers and poets. Our new unit of study in writing is poetry, which will last for approximately 4 weeks. We are learning to find topics to write about that hold strong feelings for us. This week your child will be given a small notebook on a string in which to record ideas throughout the day that may become poems during the Writing Workshop. Please be sure the notebook comes back and forth to school each day. We are reading our ‘just right’ books each day in small groups. Those books must be are returned to school each day. Like the writing notebook, they are tools and it’s hard to work if you don’t have your tool. Working with buddies and in small groups, we continue to practice the reading strategies we know and learning new ones. This month we will focus on inferring and synthesizing information. A letter will come out this week about our summer reading program on readingA-Z.

Children will learn what natural resources are, how our planet takes care of us, what maps, globes, and photos tell us about the planet, and how we can take are of the planet. If you have any books at home that your child enjoys reading about this subject, we’d love to share them. In math, we will be to make number stories adding and subtracting. We will also keep working on counting by 2s,5s, and 10s as well and measuring, identifying 3D shapes, and sequencing events in time periods, which is a critical skill for reading comprehension as well.

  3. Newsletter 7 March 27, 2009 News from 1A44 Mrs. Winter’s KG Kids A Message From Mrs. Winter Thank you for coming to the portfolio conferences. The children did a marvelous job sharing their learning with you. Several moms also shared their feelings about worms. Check the photo gallery for the pictures that speak 1000 words! This month we will be doing some KG screening for next year so there will be no school for kindergarten on April 16th or 17th. I had the opportunity to see Annabelle Hsu and this Nana pronounces her ‘sweet as can be’. She looks like her big sister and is much loved by all her siblings. We sent Ben a birthday note since his birthday was March 30th. He is well and enjoys the snow! Mark Your Calendar • April 15th Brandon’s Birthday • April 16th 17th No School • April 24 Annie’s Birthday • April 27th PD No School
