Update your assignment sheet: • You should have back: • AFIS practice: Stamped if complete • Red Lips lab- 15 points • Developing Chemical Lifts- 15 points • Toe Prints- Stamped if complete
Due Today: • Shoe Prints and Tool Mark Assignments- at least 3 of them
Getting Started 9-26 • A lab technician needs to process a door that has obvious tool marks on it from a house that has been broken into. • What would be the best way to get a cast of the tool marks? Insert silicone into the grooves? Cut out the tool marks sections? Insert the suspected tool into the groove? Or take the whole door back to the lab?
Journal 6 • What is the difference between the three types of fingerprints sought at the scene of a crime: visible, plastic and latent??? • Give an example of each. Fingerprint on skin
How to save a bite mark • Bitemarks are sometimes left on flesh, a discarded piece of fruit, or on another surface such as a pen/pencil, etc. • If the bite marks are found on someone’s skin, photography is the best method of preservation • If it is on a surface which will degrade quickly, it is best to make a cast; then a mold is made to make a replication of the teeth pattern

How is odontology used to identify victims? • Patient visits a dentist office, charts are made to note abnormalities, procedures,Xrays, etc. • Dental records note teeth in a sequence starting from 1-16 at the outermost 3rd molar in upper right jaw to 3rd molar in upper left jaw • Sequence is the same for lower starting with 17-32
ID continued • Dental charts show lost teeth, extraction, drilling, fillings and crowns • Teeth differ in detail from person to person and last longer • Dentures also are individualized to certain labs and have identification numbers
