Summary of activities of GCOS/WCRP Atmospheric Observation Panel for Climate • AOPC met 27-30 April 2009 • Will meet 26-30 April 2010 (with SPARC representation) • Tends to cover quite a lot of the same ground as WOAP • Significant involvement in: • Progress Report on GCOS Implementation (Published Aug 2009) • Update of GCOS Implementation Plan (Workshop 2-5 Feb 2009) • World Climate Conference – 3 (31 Aug - 4 Sept 2009) Adrian Simmons, AOPC Chair
Guidelines for generation of datasets and products • AOPC has led the development of a set of GCOS guidelines on generation of datasets and products[Sessions 8 and 11] • Original request from dataset developers was for GCOS recognition of dataset • Developed 12 guidelines that can serve for self-certification • Independent requests have been made for dataset review mechanism • Pre- or post-production review? • By whom? • GCOS SC identified WOAP as forum to consider this • WMO Commission for Climatology is to develop strategy for implementing quality management in climatology • Including dataset management and product generation • Has set up Expert Group
AOPC: • noted that datasets from several new reanalyses would soon be available, and recommended study groups be formed to inter-compare them, to be discussed further by the Chairs of AOPC and WOAP with a view to these groups providing reports to the next WCRP international conference on reanalysis[Session 7 of this meeting]
Atmospheric Chemistry • AOPC urged GAW secretariat to strengthen support for • common coding standards • near-real-time data supply • improved data management • network integration • for observations of atmospheric composition • Stronger emphasis on atmospheric composition in updated version of the GCOS Implementation Plan • Identified importance of observations of precursor species for ozone and aerosols in ECV table • Extensive revision of Actions and supporting text on composition • Other initiatives • GEO communities of practice for carbon and air quality • Measurement standards (WMO-BIPM workshop, 30 March – 1 April)
General topics, many to be covered later in this meeting • In-situ data • Specific network (GSN, GUAN, BSRN, comprehensive) issues • Establishment of GRUAN continues to receive special attention • [Session 9, Session 11] • Satellite data • Reports from CEOS, CGMS and some individual agencies • GSICS, SCOPE-CM, ESA-CCI [Session 5, Session 11] • Data products • GPCC [Session 8] and reanalysis [Session 7] • Interactions • With OOPC, TOPC, CCl, GEO, WCDMP, GFCS planning, … • Review items • Palaeo climatology, urban climatology, …
