Non-Nationalist Loyalty • Loyalties that are not embedded in the idea of nation. • Family loyalties
Inflation • Rising prices and a drop in the purchasing power of money.
Alienation • Being on the outside or being left out. • Often happens when people have been forced to sacrifice an important part of their identity. • China- Falun Gong- spiritual movement(collective consciousness)/under communism, religion outlawed. • Jailed/tortured
Contending Loyalties? • Country/Nation-state • Religion • Culture
Segregation • Forced separation of racial groups
The dividing line between nationalist and non-nationalist loyalties is not always clear. Loyalties not embedded in the idea of nation.
For Inuit People • Use every part of the seal. • Meat • Oil • Fur • Bones • Sinew • Cultural Business Development • Furs only “currency” they have/access to $$
Just like understandings of nationalism can change, their opinion of what is in the national interest may change or differ. Does nationalist loyalty shape your judgment? Explain.
