RMS Access and Login Applications for DP now available in RMS https://rms.arc.gov.au `Instructions to Applicants’ is your guide to using RMS Old GAMS user? Use your GAMS log in and request a new password New RMS user? Create a new account via the RMS log in page
RMS Tips Proposal Preparation • It is recommended that applicants prepare information in a word document and copy information into RMS RMS programs required • Firefox 3.0+ • Microsoft Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) • Don’t use Safari • Adobe Flash Player http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ • Adobe PDFs • PDFs should be generated from Word – NOT via scanning • When generating a Proposal PDF only click once and then wait to receive an email notification
RMS Tips Continued Timeout • After 30 minutes of inactivity on RMS, the session will log out (will receive a warning 15 mins prior) • Save frequently to prevent data loss System Outages • The ARC will update their login page if there are scheduled system outages
RMS Investigator Information • For each named participant on the proposal ensure that all details are up to date and complete including: • Personal details • Classification details • Contact details Email Address • Needs to be unique • If you have moved institutions – must email the ARC (rms@arc.gov.au) to update email address
RMS Participant Edit/View Access • Begin an application under “Create draft Proposal” screen • Nominate participants (CIs and PIs) • Enter their “Person ID” (not User ID) • CIs and PIslogin and accept • Nominated participants have view and edit access • ONLY the “Proposal Owner” can submit to RO
RMS Non-Participant Access • You can nominate other people not named on the proposal to have edit/view access(eg: if PA or RA completing parts) • Click on “Give access to non-participant” on “Draft Proposal Summary” page

New ARC Terminology • DORA – Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award Replaces previous fellowships available in the Discovery Projects scheme • DECRA – Discovery Early Career Researcher Award New, separate scheme. Replaces APD level available in DP scheme. Up to 5yrs PhD. Funding Rules & Instruction Feb
Major Changes • Projects are to be funded for a Max of 3 Years • Funding Min funding $30,000 per year Max funding $500,000 per Year • Removal of APD, ARF, APF, and QEII fellowships
Major changes continued…. • International collaboration awards - For up to 2 CI ‘s or PI’s per proposal -up to a maximum amount of $20,000 for up to 6 months over the life of the Project NOTE: ICA’s are awarded as a special conditions and therefore once awarded to a CI/PI they are the only ones who can use the ICA
Major changes continued…. • Teaching relief -Can only be requested for 2 CI’s per project - Can only be requested for up to 6 months per CI for the duration of the project - Maximum $34,879 (6 months)

Major changes continued…. • Project Quality 40% - Does the research address a significant problem? - Is the conceptual/theoretical framework innovative and original? - Will the aims, concepts, methods and results advance knowledge? - Are the project design and methods appropriate? - Will the proposed research provide economic, environmental and/or social benefit to Australia? • Does the project address National Research Priorities? Sections A, B, C
Major changes continued…. • Research Environment 20% - is there an existing, or developing, supportive and high quality research environment for this Project? - are the necessary facilities to complete the project available? - are there adequate strategies to encourage dissemination, commercialisation, if appropriate; and promotion of research outcomes? Section A, C, D, E
Major changes continued…. • Inclusion of Discovery Outstanding Researcher Award (DORA) • Funding for 3 Years Step 1 $128,632 (salary, approx Level B) Step 2 $155,714 (salary, approx level C) Step 3 $182,792 (salary, approx level D)
Major changes continued…. • A CI must request project funding in addition to a DORA salary • Only 2 CI’s can apply for a DORA on any application • Part time DORA’s can not be requested
Major changes continued…. • You can not apply for a DORA and a Future Fellowship in 2012 • Teaching relief can not be awarded to a DORA recipient • DORA’s must justify their position in section F13 (2 pgs) • No longer an option to be removed as a CI if DORA unsuccessful
Major RMS Changes • New PART C project proposal to address new Selection Criteria • On the summary page DORA’s are named CI’s (not specified as DORA) • On budget page (Section D) add name of DORA applicant • New icon appears when you need to re-save a section of the application
Things to consider when applying • Should I apply for a DORA or a Future Fellowships? GOOD QUESTION!! -If you apply for a DORA you will not be able to apply for a Future Fellowships -Future Fellowship Rules released in MID FEBUARY and due in April. -Use current ARC 2011 Documents as a guide although changes expected
Things to consider continued….. • Should I be applying for a DECRA? -If you have approx <5 years post PhD experience • Can I be named on a DP Project which is similar to a DECRA Project? GREAT QUESTION!!! -not clear in DP Funding Rules or Instructions. ARC to advise through DECRA Funding Rules.
Things to consider continued….. • If applying with CI’s from other eligible please ensure they are not exceeding their application limit. It is impossible for MRO to check this eligibility issue
