American ‘Un-Preparedness’ Results from a 2009 Citizen Corps National Survey • 43% do not have disaster supplies in homes • 50% are not familiar with community alerts/warning systems • 56% do not have a household emergency plan • 58% are unfamiliar with community evacuation routes • 74% have not participated in a workplace shelter-in-place drill • 77% have not volunteered for community preparedness activities; however, 34% did volunteer during a crisis in their community • 80% have not completed a home evacuation drill

  3. The Bottom Line • Americans have a high expectation of assistance from the emergency responder community… • … but have NOT practiced response protocols nor drilled to know critical actions needed and easily sustainable

  4. 2010 Goals‘9/11 Drill Down for Safety’ 1. Engage Americans in doing a preparedness activity during National Preparedness Month 2. Involve youth 3. Focus on texting during a crisis thereby freeing up space for other critical uses of digital/voice network (first responders) 4. Establish research benchmarks on Americans attitudes toward preparedness 5. Create sustainable partnerships with government, business, non-profit, and other stakeholders -1-

  5. 2009 ‘Drill Down’ Results • Over 400,000 Americans participated • More than 127 sites/cities in 24 states • Over 100 million media impressions worldwide!!!

  6. 2010 / Safe America Objectives • Increase participation (1 million level) • Expand network of corporate, nonprofit, government, and community partners (already ‘up’ from 2009!) • Offer educational element focusing on youth, thereby engaging them in demonstrating preparedness and sharing the importance with the next generation (focus on outreach to college campuses, sororities and fraternities) • Conduct research that Safe America can share with FEMA, American Red Cross and other integral organizations explaining how people ‘feel’ about being active participants in resiliency • Create a ‘megacommunity’ of public, non-profit and private sectors… that popularizes preparedness • Share memorable messaging, including our themes of be Prepared, Not Scared™ and Text First, Talk Second™ • Focus on texting, with a promotion via 78247 that can go viral with involvement from wireless carriers, NGOs and other corporate partners • Update regularly www.SafeAmericaPrepared.org with fresh, engaging content

Pledge / Sign-ups Participants • Seek Verizon Wireless help in sending out a text to its 90 million customers • Seek 15 partners to attract 1 million ‘base participants’ (UPS, Motorola, State Farm, Verizon employees plus NGOs (PTA, All Hazards Consortium, NEDRIX, NEMA, IAEM exceed 6 million members!) • Track any other drills (Great California Shakeout) from Sept 1 – October 30) and aggregate them • Involve Collaborative Fusion and determine their footprint (16-state participants)

  9. ‘How to’ Conduct a ‘Drill Down’ Text Drill Text family members on 9/11 – with a four-digit ‘RUOK’ message and watch for a ‘IMOK’ reply. Make sure all family members know how to text – and if they don’t, teach them!! Encourage employees of all ages to ‘drill’ by texting and reach out to family, neighbors and others to practice connectivity (as they might in a disaster). Msg - To all employees evacuate bldg via south exits Msg - Hey mom, with Sarah, we r ok Msg – hey son, Dad is ok, be home soon Msg- kids, are you ok? Dad

  10. DRI International offers Professionals Credits for Participating! • Just in: register at safeameicaprepared.org and tell us what you’re doing and receive credit toward re-certification!!! This can include: • Conducting a ‘drill’ – an evacuation, shelter-in-place or other activity • Attending a preparedness course or workshop • Sending out a practice emergency alert notification to employees • Conducting a tabletop exercise • Completing an organizational risk/threat assessment
