Behaviorism Theory Lesson Plans …An example of the theory in action… By Kyle, Michelle and Gretchen
Lesson Plan Objective: • Narration of the"The Milk Makers”by Gail Gibbons. • Students will retell the story in sequential order by the use of large pictures. • Time allotted for this is approximately 30 minutes.
Lesson Plan Continued Lesson: • Starting at the large carpet with all eyes on teacherto avoid unwanted reinforcements… • Teacher narrates the picture book and re-explains the four stages of milk production. • Introduce four pictures that illustrate each of the four stages.
Harvesting Stage 1 Milk the cow…
Transportation Stage 2 Transportation of the milk…
Production Stage 3 Bottling the milk…
Stage 4 Grocery Store Milk at the grocery store…
Behaviorism Assessment Each child receives a set of four pictures… The children need to put their own set in sequential order… Unconditioned response: child holds up picture… Unconditioned stimulus: teacher asks for a certain card… Conditioned stimulus: teachers positive feedback… Conditioned response: prompting of correct answer…
Reinforcements & Rewards Each child is tested individually. Through operant conditioning each child will receive 1 sticker for every correct answer. Once all four stickers have been earned in a row; the child can move from the group and onto a new activity. Retest children (individually) until each one has mastered the material.
Understanding the Behaviorism Theory Simplifying lessons • The child’s focused attention and the teachers curriculum are on one specific • goal. • There are three parts to the Behaviorist Lesson Plan; planning, execution and • assessment.
Conclusion Pro’s Con’s Efficient method… More time for other tasks… Beneficial for ADHD/ADD kids… Can be wearisome for the child that needs more variety…
Final Thoughts When reviewing the pro’s and con’s, it’s clear that the behaviorism theory does warrant its uses. As with many things, there’s a time and place for it. This theory and way of teaching and assessing can be very beneficial for very focused material.
