What is Carpal Tunnel? • Carpal tunnel is swelling of tendons in your hands from over using them that puts pressure on the median nerve resulting in tingling and numbness in your thumb, index, and middle fingers.
Conditions That May Contribute to The Development of Carpal Tunnel • Pregnancy • Hypothyroidism • Diabetes • Arthritis • Obesity • Prior wrist injury
More Conditions… • If a certain activity is repeated frequently in your life whether it is work or recreational it can cause carpal tunnel. Some examples are: • Typing • Using tools • Knitting or sewing • Barcode scanning
Treatment • First and foremost if possible to lessen the activity that may be causing it would help. Other possible treatments are: • Icing • A night splint • Anti-inflammatory medication • Avoiding: alcohol, caffeine and tobacco • Increase vitamin B • Strengthen arm and shoulder muscles • Surgery may be necessary
