Our Mission • The Collingwood Public Library and TRACKS, have formed a partnership to deliver services to teens and young adults in our community; especially those “at risk.” Our partnership will enable us to achieve common goals and enhance service delivery to young people in our community. • We will use arts and culture as the vehicle to “reach” teens and deliver our programs and services. “The ability to engage and motivate children and youth from all socioeconomic levels in education and community is a well respected strength of arts and culture.” (Creative City Network of Canada 2005. Personal and social development of children and youth.) • It is evident that art programmes have a positive effect on teens; and consequently help build self-esteem and positive assets in young people. In essence, these positive attributes help us build better, stronger communities. • Promote and market the library and library services to teens, especially those at-risk.
Project Objectives • To promote arts and culture to teens and deliver these services in a safe and welcoming environment. • Space for teens to hang their art, create art (designated graffiti wall space). • Space to have music jam sessions, battle of the bands, record their songs, perform for library patrons, poetry slams, and open mike nights. • Promoting youth ownership of their space. Giving them responsibility for maintaining their space (rotation of artwork), keeping it clean and fundraising to ensure sustainability.
Project Objectives • Creating partnerships to deliver more programs and services to teens in the library. • To create a place where youth can enjoy numerous creative, educational and constructive activities in a safe environment, while allowing them opportunities for exploration and growth. • To make this space free and accessible to all, despite socioeconomic barriers. • To enhance and expand public library service to young adults, while offering educational opportunities for students, by promoting a library card for every student.
Project Objectives • To create a Youth Advisory Committee that will permit young adults to offer advice regarding the purchase of material, programs and services. • To develop art and pop culture workshops for teens. • To expand our Tutoring for Literacy program. • To develop additional homework and reading help programs for children and teens.
Where to Start • Be adventurous & creative • Ask the teens (TAG) • Visit other libraries (you can go virtually anywhere) • Do what you already know • Try new things, but know your stuff! • Pop Culture • Dust yourself off & try again :D • Start simple… then go BIG • Doesn’t have to be literacy related!
