Structure of the radiocarbon database • Database structure: country, period, site name + type, lab code, date BP + standard deviation (< 150 years), nature of date/sample, archaeological context, geographical coordinates, references • Data collection: Shennan & Steele 2000, RADON database, Jadin 2003, IPA, ORAU, Biagi et al. 2005,... • Data selection: Late Mesolithic, Early Neolithic, all dates for archaeological cultures associated with inception of Neolithic practices

Future development of the database • Further data collection: eastern Europe, Balkans (e.g. IPCTE), northern Europe (TRBK, Corded Ware), recent published dating programmes (e.g. Cambridge Archaeological Journal 17, suppl.) • Future data collection: targeted fieldwork + sample selection • Auditing of the database: critical assessment of dates, AMS vs. conventional, wood vs. short-lived material, ‘detailed knowledge of the shape of the calibration curve’
