  3. What is Definition Poetry? Definition poetry is poetry that defines a concept or topic using creative and descriptive words.

  4. Prewriting • The stage where you get ready to write. • In this stage you: • Choose a topic • Decide why you are writing • Decide who your audience will be • Decide what form to use

  9. Practice Activity • Show example of the definition poems from A Hole is to Dig. • Model strategy by filling in the beginning of the graphic organizer. • Take students dictation using interactive writing to complete the graphic organizer.

  10. Assessment Activity The students will fill out there own graphic organizer based on a topic related to material they are currently discussing.

  12. What is Definition Poetry? Definition poetry uses descriptive language and words that define a word or topic in a creative way.

  13. Drafting The stage where you take the ideas written on your graphic organizer, put them into complete sentences and begin organizing them in correct the format.

Practice Activity • Display the class prewriting graphic organizer for everyone to see. • Model the strategy by taking the information from the class prewriting graphic organizer to fill in the drafting graphic organizer. • Be sure to form complete sentences from these ideas. • Take students dictation using interactive writing to create complete sentences and complete the graphic organizer.

  16. Assessment Activity The students will fill out there own drafting graphic organizer based on the ideas they created on their own prewriting graphic organizer and form complete sentences.
