Career Connect Local Prototypes • Interrelated Problems: • Washington employers have 250,000+ job openings per year • 73% require some postsecondary education • Skill gaps slow economic growth and job creation • Young adult unemployment is above 12% • Only 40% of WA students achieve a post-high school credential • 5-year high school graduation rate is 81.9% - 18,000 young people per year do not graduate within 5 years of starting school Governor Inslee’s challenge to 12 Local Teams (co-lead by Workforce Development Councils & STEM Networks): • Address the above gap by providing 15,000 youth with career connected learning experiences, of which at least 1,500 are intensive on-the-job learning experiences such as registered apprenticeships, internships, or co-operative learning experiences • Move towards making career connected learning part of every WA youth’s experience
Career Connect Local Prototypes – Performance Update • Nearly 50,000 career connected learning experiences and 1,700 comprehensive internships since start of Career Connect Washington pilots • Outcomes to-date have exceeded the Governor’s challenge: • Number of career connected learning experiences (>49,000) • Comprehensive internships (~1,700) • Engagement and communications events (~80 events) • Apprentices in new and expanded programs (~175 apprentices) • 17 new organizations are employing apprentices • Each region is developing programs, forming partnerships, and tracking student data to create new career connected learning experiences for students. • New standards (16+): • Controls Technology • IT Junior Coder • Business Operations Project Coordinator • Computer Technician I • Hospitality • Public Safety • Irrigation Technology • Pre-School Teacher
Career Connect 2.0 • Retains regional team approach • Supports intermediaries for program/curriculum design • Supports secondary and post-secondary education partners • Funds data enclave • Establishes cross-agency governance committee to : • Design Career Launch Endorsement process • Design and execute grants to regional networks and intermediaries • Implement marketing and communications agenda • Develop web resources for students, employers, and the public • Develop data systems for planning and evaluations purposes • Create a state-wide inventory to identify equity supports
Launch funding secured: $24M operating and $9.5M capital funding for Career Connect Washington (and supported initiatives) *Funding not exclusive to Career Launch
