The vast majority of class time is spent on hands on activities, skill building and producing a product.
During the first 3 weeks we work on: • Background vocabulary. • Safety. • Tools demonstrations. • Project planning. • This gives me a chance to assess students special needs.
No mechanical experience. Some mechanical experience. Great knowledge and mechanical experience. An IEP. Fear of power tools Lack of confidence. Over confidence. Academically gifted mechanically challenged. Mechanically gifted academically challenged. Gender stereotypes can also be a factor. Some students come to class with:
Accommodations needed • It depends on what each student needs, some students need me to: • Stand there and talk them through the process. • Physically help them first couple times using a new tool. • Depending on the disability, do a portion of the project with them watching. All students are capable of doing some portion of the project on their own.
I will focus on intro to woods • There are no text books used in the majority of my classes. • Reading proficiency does not play a major part in students success. • But there are quite a few vocabulary words to learn in order to succeed.
By the time the students get to the lab they have: • Read the instructions. • Rewritten the instructions. • Watched the instructor demonstrate building the project. • Graded a finished project.
My class starts with the instructor usually: • Greet the students in the hall. • Take attendance. • Give instructions and encouragement for the day. • Put on safety glasses. • Roll up sleeves. • Begin working on projects. (students are encouraged to work in groups on their individual projects.)
The instructors roll in the lab setting is to: • Help individual students with particular problems. • Encourage individual students. Some student need to hear positive things one to one • Motivate struggling students. • Remind students of dead lines. (There are three projects the students are working on with 26 students it difficult to assess students progress to complete project on time.) • Make sure safety rule are being followed. • Get to know the students personally. (the bigger the class is the harder this is to accomplish.)
The end of the day students are expected to clean up there assigned area and wait for the bell.
