Local Government • The local government is below the state government • There are different levels of local government: county, city, and/or town • The powers and responsibilities of cities and counties are different in each state.

Taxes • Most states have sales tax. • Money from sales tax goes to the local government to pay for services. • Property tax is what citizens pay if they own a home. This pays for: • Schools • Roads • Emergency services End Next

Who runs the National government? • The president is the head of the executive branch. • He or She is elected by the citizens of the united states every four years. • He or She can then choose people to help run the states. End Next

State Government • Each state has its own constitution that runs the laws that the national government does not. End Next
What is State Government made up of? • State and local governments work together to run schools, police departments, libraries, and parks • State governments are divided into 3 different branches just like the national government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial
State Branches • Executive: • The governor is the leader of each state government. • Legislative: • This branch makes the state laws and handles the state money. • Judicial: • This branch is made up of a supreme court and lower courts.
