  1. The Opening of The Matrix

  2. Institutional Information Its traditional that in the first seconds of a film opening that the Films Primary Institutions are shown. In the Case of The Matrix, Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Picturesare shown in the first 30 seconds While the institutions are on screen there is the nondiegetic soundtrack being play, which starts off quiet and slowly builds the audience’s suspense showing that the film is lead to an Action Moment. The Institutions logos are also coloured green to refer to the rest of the opening

  3. Conveyance of Genre After the institution are shown the iconic matrix characters drop shown (Background Image), this symbolizes the Sci-Fi genre of the film as it is shown as it would be on a computer screen with the Green text on a black background as used on the first generation of computers. The Title is then spelt out from the characters, showing the audience that the film is primarily based on Science Fiction.

  4. Conveyance of Genre The Scene then shows text (shown as if on a computer still), with nondiegetic sound of a telephone call between two characters discussing a particular person. This lets the audience have a preview of how the plot is set, making viewers want to carrying on and learn who and what they are talking about. As the conversation carries on the camera zooms into the computer matrix screen (background) until its focusing on fewer and fewer letters/numbers, this continues to add to the audiences suspense, waiting for the action to begin.

  5. How Characters used show Genre After the ‘Phone Call’ the camera shows a close-up of a police office in search of something or someone. This is the first on-screen indication of the action genre of the film. The Mise-en-scene of the clip shows the serious facial expressio -n of the character and the visual of a weapon are key indicators of an action scene in any film. The camera then Pans round and shows a low-angle of a group of armed police characters moving through a derelict building, this is the tipping point of the built-up suspense, with the camera following the characters as they surround and kick down the last door. Throughout the scene there is only diegetic sound of footsteps, this indicates the action scene is soon to be shown.

  6. How shots and editing show Genre Here is a prime-example of how light editing can brandish the genre of the film. The clip shows a woman in a darkly lit room with little chance of escape. The darkness can act as the fear of the audience of the unknowing to what will happen next. The camera then pans up to reveal a close-up of the mysterious characters face and act of surrender. To close-up of the character gives the audience an image of what the film’s hero may look-like and gives a familiarity link with the audience.
